Each year we see new and emerging data coming out from studies and research surveys. Here we will compile the most interesting findings regarding LGBTQIA+ dating and relationships.

To keep things easy we’ve broken them into several categories: dating, relationships, marriage and divorce. And now with the greater acceptance and legal recognition of LGBTQIA marriages across the world, we are seeing some very interesting things.

Dating: 

– According to a 2023 survey by Hinge, 89% of LGBTQIA+ daters find a first date successful as long as there’s good conversation⁴. 

– A 2022 Pew Research Center survey found that 17% of adults younger than 30 identify as LGBTQIA+, compared with 8% of those ages 30 to 49, 5% of those 50 to 64 and 2% of those 65 and older⁵. 

– A 2021 study by Statista found that Sweden and the Netherlands had the highest acceptance of homosexuality among 34 countries, with 94% and 92% of respondents saying it should be accepted by society, respectively². 

– A 2020 report by MedAlertHelp.org estimated that there are roughly 9 million LGBTQIA+ people in the US and more than 650,000 same-sex couples¹¹. 

– A 2019 report by SexualDiversity.Org stated that 59% of Americans support the equal right to marry for same-sex couples¹². 

Relationships: 

– A 2021 Census Bureau survey estimated that there were 1.2 million same-sex couple households in the US, and of them, 59% (711,129) were married couples⁹. 

– A 2021 study by Statista found that 29.4% of people in same-sex married couples in California had a graduate degree, compared to 16.8% of people in opposite-sex married couples¹. 

– A 2020 study by Springer found that among lesbian parents with children conceived through donor insemination, 40 of 73 couples (55%) had dissolved their relationships by the time children were 17 years old, as compared with a 36% divorce rate among heterosexual couples with 17-year-old children in the US National Survey of Family Growth⁷. 

– A 2019 report by Family Equality estimated that there are at least 3 million LGBTQIA+ parents in the US, and 6 million children have an LGBTQIA+ parent. 

– A 2019 report by Statista found that in New York, 13.8% of same-sex and 32.5% of opposite-sex unmarried couples lived with children under the age of 18¹. 

Marriage: 

– A 2022 study by Statista found that 29 countries in the world permit same-sex marriage, with Europe having the most (16 countries), followed by the Americas (7 countries), Oceania (3 countries), and Africa and Asia (1 country each)². 

– A 2021 Census Bureau report found that nationally, 53.4% of people in same-sex married couples were female and 46.6% were male³. 

– A 2021 study by Statista found that in Florida, 11.2% of people in same-sex unmarried couples were without health insurance at the time of interview, compared to 21.8% of people in opposite-sex unmarried couples¹. 

– A 2020 report by Mediate.com found that researchers said that out of the total number of divorce petitions filed by same-sex couples in 2019, nearly 75% involved lesbian couples⁸. 

– A 2019 report by Statista found that in the Netherlands, 80% of respondents supported the right of same-sex couples to adopt children, while in Russia, only 7% did². 

Divorce: 

– A 2024 report by AtOnce.com found that LGBTQIA+ divorce rates have increased by 20% in the past decade⁶. 

– A 2024 report by AtOnce.com also found that same-sex couples are 1.5 times more likely to divorce than opposite-sex couples⁶. 

– A 2024 report by AtOnce.com further found that the average duration of a same-sex marriage before divorce is 4 years⁶. 

– A 2020 report by Mediate.com found that the divorce rate among transgender individuals is higher compared to cisgender individuals⁸. 

– A 2020 report by Mediate.com also found that LGBTQIA+ couples with children have a higher divorce rate than those without children⁸.
