1. Lying: He tells blatant lies, even when you know the truth. This makes you start doubting your own memory and reality. And it can be used to not only deny his bad behavior but to start making excuses and reasons that may have never even existed.
2. Denial: He denies things he said or did, even when you have proof. This constant denial can make you question the validity of your emotions and feelings and after a while, it diminishes how you look at your own feelings and can have you starting to blame yourself for his bad behavior.
3. Blame Shifting: Look ladies, you are going to do things that are wrong, you’re going to mess up, you’re going to be the bad one sometime, because we all are eventually. But if he blames you for things that aren’t your fault, making you feel guilty and responsible for his actions, that is the heart of gaslighting and is nothing but a control scheme.
4. Isolation: He tries to isolate you from friends and family, making you more dependent on him. This can make it harder for you to get support and perspective from others.
5. Undermining: He undermines your confidence by making negative comments about your abilities and worth.
The Effects of Gaslighting
Gaslighting can have serious effects on your mental health and well-being. Here are some ways it can impact you:
1. Self-Doubt: Constantly questioning your reality can lead to severe self-doubt and low self-esteem. it can have you telling yourself things like, “maybe I just don’t deserve better, maybe I am the cause of all this, maybe it is my fault x happened…”
2. Anxiety and Depression: The stress of being gaslit can cause anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. And those issues can roll into even bigger ones. You can’t start down the path towards harming your own mental health.
3. Loss of Trust: This is probably the very first thing that happens with gaslighting in a relationship from my experience with couples. It can make it hard to trust your own judgment and the people around you.
4. Emotional Dependence: You might become emotionally dependent on the gaslighter, feeling like you can’t make decisions without him.
Why Men Gaslight Women
Men might gaslight women for various reasons, including insecurity, a need for control, or past trauma. Understanding this can help you recognize that the problem lies with his behavior, not with you.
How to Deal with Gaslighting from a Man
If you are being gaslit by your man, it has to be dealt with healthily before things get out of hand.
Here’s how:
1. Trust Your Instincts: If it feels like you are being mistreated, you probably are. If it feels like you are being deceived or lied to or controlled, you just might be.
2. Document Everything: You’re a lady, you can’t just pick him up and throw him out of the house. Keep a record of conversations and events. This can help you see patterns and have proof of what’s happening and can help if there becomes a need to get the law involved.
3. Seek Support: Your support system is the number one thing that can help you navigate a troubled relationship when you are being gaslit. Talk to friends, family, or a therapist. They can provide perspective and support, just remember to take everyone’s opinions with a grain of salt.
4. Set Boundaries: Establish clear boundaries with the gaslighter. Let him know what behavior is unacceptable. Just bringing it to a man’s attention might be all it takes to have him recognize and correct it.
5. Consider Leaving: If the gaslighting continues, it might be best to leave the relationship for your own well-being.
You don’t have to put up with being gaslit
